My Story

Dr. Sonia Smith is a passionate and active advocate for and voice against social injustices that affect the lives of individuals and families, especially women and children. Dr. Smith has over 20 years of clinical experience in the field of Social Work and Mental Health. She specializes in family and marital therapy, psychotherapy and mental health counseling that assist couples, individuals, families and children regain rightful balance in their relationships with each other, and their overall wellbeing.

 

Dr. Smith is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R), certified Family Life Educator (NAD), an informed therapist in Complicated Grief Treatment Therapy (Center for Complicated Grief), Relationship Life Coach (SI Coaching Institute), an Empowerment Facilitator with the 4 Real Women International Organization, Inc. (4RWI), and an MWBE certified entrepreneur.

Dr. Smith began as an entrepreneur when she transitioned from social services/not for profit agency work and founded the innovative Family Matters: S.P.A. (Soaring Past Adversities!) in 2007. She is currently the Executive Director and Lead Therapist at Family Matters Counseling and Consulting Services located in Brooklyn, NY.  

 

Family Matters focus on supporting individuals and families across a broad scope of life issues including addressing anxiety and depression, marital, parental problems; coping with stress, loss, grief and bereavement; healing from domestic violence, and trauma.  Dr. Smith practices with a ‘down to earth’, openness to integrating cultural and spiritual consciousness in her work. 

Dr. Smith also regularly participates in presentations, workshops, and consultations for community partners, schools, and churches.
